Learning space

Currently, there is an urgent need for more space for students and learning materials. In the primary school, there are effectively more than 70 students per class, and 5 out of 13 of the total classrooms are built with precarious materials, with walls that are affected by the humidity. For the preschool level, there is only one block with two classrooms.

Missing learning materials.
A wall affected by humidity.
The benches are of very low quality, uncomfortable and not ergonomic (no backs, and the seats are not wide enough).

Furthermore, the classes are mixed and the desks are either too tall for young students and too short for the older students, which makes writing difficult for the majority of them.

The classes are very crowded (up to 70 students per class). The pupils are of different ages; consequently, the desks are not suitable for all.

Finally, the usage of the classrooms is complicated because of how the first-year classes alternate in the morning and the afternoon which use the same classroom. It is the same situation for the second-year classes.

Toilets

The hygiene situation of the existing school is extremely poor:

  • The primary school has a block of toilets that do not meet standard hygiene practices in schools
  • The preschool class only has one toilet made from mud

These teaching establishments thus don’t have adequate toilet facilities.

The existing toilets are excessively wide, and that makes them not very practical.

The project aims to remedy this situation by building a sufficient number of dry, modern, and hygienic toilets for the students.

Canteen

The school canteen is composed of only one covered kitchen space and a small storage space made of mud-bricks. When we were visiting, it was not functional.

New School Model

Here is the model for the new schools we wish to build. This school model was built in Giteranyi in 2022. However, it does not satisfy the needs of the continually growing village population.
